BFO -- Using 20/20 Vision to Find the Message
Jenny Pearce
teaches that our feelings and the situations causing these feelings contain messages. She also teaches that although the feeling or the situation may be crappy, the message in it is perfect. I have found it easiest to help learn what the messages are in my feelings by using the 20/20 vision of hindsight. This helps me to see what the message is, so I can apply it in the future. This is also a valuable tool that leads me to BFO's
Many times when we are with our horses it is hard to "get the memo" in the moment. Things happen too fast, we are too close to see the underlying pattern, or we are too focused on what we are trying to accomplish.
I use journaling to help me decipher what messages I may have missed at the time I was with Gunny.
If you are new to thinking about feelings in this way, there are several places to get more information on the messages commonly contained in certain feelings."Pathway to Heaven on Earth" by Jenny Pearce, Riding Between the Worlds by Linda Kohanov, and "The Language of Emotion" by Karla McLaren all cover this topic.
I found these a helpful place to start, but I have also found that I can refine the list to include smaller feelings which are personal messages and signals to listen to. For example, I have noticed that when I "get something" so I am on the right track, I will get a certain feeling. I have come to recognize this feeling as a signal that I listen to. Learning your own personal signals is a matter of becoming aware of your feelings and the effect of your actions on them. A big clue is that when you are not getting the message, the feeling will stay the same or get more intense. When you get the message the crappy feeling diminishes or goes away completely. Sometimes you need to take the action of the message in order for the feeling to go away completely.
